Starbucks has quietly rolled back its 2018 open-door policy by limiting restroom use to paying customers, citing safety and cleanliness concerns. Critics argue this move compromises the brand’s inclusive “third place” ethos, which once welcomed everyone—even those not making a purchase.

The policy shift puts baristas in a difficult position. They must now determine who qualifies as a paying customer and occasionally turn away those unaware of the rule. Such confrontations can be uncomfortable, especially without uniform guidelines or a clear public statement from Starbucks.
Whether this policy will stay in effect across all stores remains unclear. Still, its reintroduction has sparked debate, with some applauding the emphasis on safety and others lamenting what they see as a step away from the company’s once-community-driven values.
