Everything You Need to Know About Starbucks Rewards – 2026

For years, Starbucks Rewards followed a relatively simple formula: spend money, earn Stars, redeem them for free drinks, food, or merchandise. While the program has remained one of the most popular restaurant loyalty programs in the U.S., Starbucks has now rolled out its biggest overhaul in years with the launch of a three-tier membership system, new redemption options, and additional perks aimed at its most loyal customers. The changes officially took effect on March 10, 2026.

How the Old Program Worked

Under the previous Rewards program, every member essentially received the same benefits regardless of how frequently they visited Starbucks. Members earned Stars on eligible purchases, redeemed those Stars using fixed reward tiers, and all Stars expired after six months if they weren’t used.

The program was straightforward: everyone earned at the same rate when making qualifying purchases, birthday rewards were available only on a member’s birthday, and there were no elite membership levels. While occasional promotions like Double Star Days offered bonus earning opportunities, every member had access to the same core benefits.

What’s Changed?

The new Starbucks Rewards program introduces several significant changes:

  • Three membership tiers: Green, Gold, and Reserve.
  • Different Star earning rates based on membership level.
  • Stars that never expire for Gold and Reserve members.
  • A new 60-Star reward worth $2 off any purchase.
  • Monthly “Free Mod Mondays” for complimentary drink customizations.
  • Bonus Stars for qualifying Starbucks Card reloads.
  • Expanded Double Star Day opportunities.
  • The ability to link Starbucks Rewards with select partner loyalty programs like Delta SkyMiles and Marriott Bonvoy.

The New Membership Levels

Every Rewards member starts at the Green level.

Green members earn 1 Star per dollar spent, receive birthday rewards, participate in promotions and games, and can extend expiring Stars by one month by completing qualifying monthly activity, such as making a purchase or redeeming a reward.

Gold status is earned after collecting 500 Stars within a 12-month period. Gold members earn 1.2 Stars per dollar, enjoy Stars that no longer expire while maintaining Gold status, receive additional Double Star Days throughout the year, and have a seven-day window to redeem their birthday reward.

The highest level, Reserve, requires earning 2,500 Stars in a year. Reserve members earn 1.7 Stars per dollar, receive at least six exclusive Double Star Days annually, enjoy a 30-day birthday reward window, gain access to exclusive merchandise and events, and may even qualify for coffee-focused travel experiences hosted by Starbucks.

Updated Reward Redemption

Starbucks also adjusted how Stars can be redeemed.

The new redemption options include:

  • 25 Stars: One drink customization (up to $1 value)
  • 60 Stars: $2 off any purchase
  • 100 Stars: Brewed coffee, tea, bakery item, or packaged snack (up to $6 value)
  • 200 Stars: Handcrafted beverages or breakfast items (up to $10 value)
  • 300 Stars: Sandwiches, protein boxes, or packaged coffee (up to $16 value)
  • 400 Stars: Select merchandise (up to $20 value)

Unlike the previous program, several reward levels now include maximum dollar-value caps, meaning some premium drinks or heavily customized beverages may require paying the difference if they exceed the reward’s value limit.

Why Some Customers Are Unhappy

While Starbucks is marketing the overhaul as offering more personalization and flexibility, not every customer views the changes positively.

The biggest criticism centers around earning Stars. Frequent Starbucks Card users who previously maximized their Star earnings may find that they accumulate rewards more slowly unless they qualify for Gold or Reserve status. Casual customers also remain in the Green tier, where Stars continue to expire after six months without ongoing activity.

The introduction of dollar-value caps on reward redemptions has also raised concerns. Previously, many customers strategically redeemed Stars for high-value customized drinks. Under the revised system, expensive beverages may exceed the maximum reward value, reducing the overall value of a redemption for some members.

Finally, some longtime members see the new tier structure as favoring Starbucks’ highest-spending customers. Reserve members receive substantially better earning rates and exclusive benefits that casual visitors are unlikely to access.

New Features Worth Taking Advantage Of

Despite the criticism, the revised program does introduce several genuinely useful additions.

The monthly Free Mod Mondays promotion allows every member to receive one complimentary drink customization, including options like an extra espresso shot, flavored syrup, or cold foam.

The new 60-Star redemption provides a flexible way to save money before reaching larger reward thresholds.

Gold and Reserve members no longer have to worry about Star expiration, while all members can earn bonus Stars through qualifying digital Starbucks Card reloads, reusable cup purchases, games, and personalized promotions. Starbucks has also expanded partnerships with programs including Delta SkyMiles and Marriott Bonvoy, creating new ways to earn additional rewards.

Tips for Getting the Most Value

The updated program rewards engagement just as much as spending. To maximize your Rewards:

  • Join every promotion and personalized challenge in the Starbucks app.
  • Take advantage of Free Mod Mondays each month.
  • Use a reusable cup whenever possible to earn bonus Stars.
  • Reload your Starbucks Card digitally in qualifying amounts to earn extra Stars.
  • If you’re close to Gold status, it may be worth consolidating purchases to reach the 500-Star threshold, since Gold members earn Stars faster and no longer face expiration.
  • When redeeming Stars, compare the value of your order against each reward tier to ensure you’re getting the best return.

While the new Starbucks Rewards program is more complex than its predecessor, it also offers more ways to earn and save—particularly for regular customers. Casual visitors may notice reduced value compared to the previous system, but members who actively use the Starbucks app, participate in promotions, and reach Gold or Reserve status stand to benefit from many of the program’s new features.

Coffee news before your next order.
