In a historic move that celebrates the heart of the coffee experience, Starbucks has named its first Global Barista Champion. The honor went to Nobuki, a barista from Japan, after a multi-round competition that brought together top talent from Starbucks stores around the world.
The championship, part of Starbucks’ 2025 Leadership Experience summit, showcased the skills of 18 finalists—selected from a staggering 84,000 store partners globally. Contestants were judged on drink craft, customer connection, and store spirit, rather than speed or volume alone.
Nobuki’s win wasn’t just symbolic—he and the other finalists will work directly with Starbucks’ beverage innovation team to co-create a new drink that will debut in stores across the U.S. later this year. The company says this is more than a prize; it’s a statement that the barista role is evolving from behind-the-bar to center stage.
The Global Barista Championship is part of Starbucks’ ongoing push to reconnect with its workforce and refocus on the café experience as a craft—something the brand hopes will resonate with both employees and customers alike.
