Starbucks Orders Corporate Staff Back to Office

Starbucks is asking more from its corporate employees—starting September 29, staff will be required to work four days a week in-office, up from the previous hybrid schedule of three.

The shift is part of the company’s broader “Back to Starbucks” strategy under new CEO Brian Niccol, who joined from Chipotle last year. While Niccol wasn’t initially required to relocate, Starbucks confirmed he now has both a residence and an office in Seattle. His focus? Rebuilding culture, accelerating decision-making, and reversing a five-quarter sales slump.

In a statement, Niccol said, “We are reestablishing our in-office culture because we do our best work when we’re together… As we work to turn the business around, all these things matter more than ever.”

The update goes beyond just four days a week. Starbucks also announced that remote people managers will need to relocate to Seattle or Toronto within the next 12 months—a clear signal that proximity is becoming part of the job description again.

For those not on board with the shift, Starbucks is offering a one-time voluntary exit package, with cash payouts ranging from $20,000 to $100,000 depending on level.

The tone from leadership is clear: rebuilding Starbucks starts at the ground level—but it’s also going to take showing up.
