Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol believes that the “30-second rule” is key to transforming the coffee giant’s operations and customer experience. The goal? Serve brewed coffee in under 30 seconds. “We need to get back to the basics of delivering speed and personalization in ways that delight our customers,” Niccol said.
To achieve this, Starbucks plans several changes, including reintroducing personalized touches like writing customer names on cups and reinstating condiment bars. The company also aims to enhance its mobile ordering experience by creating dedicated pick-up locations and improving the accuracy of wait times to minimize customer frustration.
Streamlining the menu will also play a significant role. Starbucks intends to remove less popular espresso drinks to simplify operations and allow baristas to focus on speed and quality. “Simplification is not about doing less,” Niccol explained. “It’s about doing what we do best—better.”
Despite current financial pressures, Starbucks has committed to pausing price hikes for the rest of the fiscal year. Corporate employees will also see a 40% reduction in bonuses as the company reallocates resources toward improving the customer experience.
Niccol’s vision underscores the importance of marrying operational efficiency with personal connection, a balance supported by science and customer behavior trends. For Starbucks, the future isn’t just about speed—it’s about making every second count.
